Centered on the theme The Eye of the Machine, NTNU Art Museum engages in dialogues with the optical technologies of Polaroid at the Stage of Light. Since the 1940s, Polaroid has manufactured products including polarizing filters, airplane portholes, sunglasses, 3D movies, protective goggles, and reconnaissance plane accessories. The company also initiated the development of the SX-70, leading to the eventual creation of instant cameras. Optical products from Polaroid have enabled aerial views of landscapes, enhanced movie-watching experiences, and assisted in military and medical operations, reflecting the interaction between humans and the world through machines. Featured in this exhibition, Frames of Options is an experimental, AI-assisted interactive piece that allows viewers to experience intertwining conflict and harmony in images. Audience–machine interaction triggers changes in the imagery, embodying a simple resolution of conflicts in front of the machine, yet highlighting the complexity of resolving conflicts in the real world.

The Stage of Light is committed to art collection and museum technology experimentation. It provides an immersive space for the fusion of art and technology. Supported by the Ministry of Education’s Foresight Display Technology Introduction into Establishment of Art Venue and Promotion program, this initiative fosters collection translation, talent cultivation, and joint experiments by teachers and students.

Frames of Options

2024

Since the introduction of its instant cameras in the 1940s, Polaroid has enabled users to capture marvelous scenes worldwide and provide images with unique textures that represent our diverse perceptions of the world. The distinctive frame of polaroid images, which has become almost a symbolic icon, is therefore adopted as a key presentation form in this artwork. Frames of Options aims to convey concerns and hopes regarding recent global conflicts through four dynamic scenes within these frames. Generated and created experimentally with AI-assisted technology and edited for presentation, the moving images depict contrasts of war and harmony. Interaction with the artwork is enabled through image detection tools and programming, allowing viewers to experience the transition from stillness to motion when approaching a frame, symbolizing the tension of conflict and the joy of harmony. This artwork serves as a reminder that conflict and harmony are but a hair’s width from one another. It underscores the importance of collective will in halting conflicts, which is perhaps a crucial goal for all humanity in the quest for a better future.
